BLM Releases a Management Plan That Would Result in the Destruction of America’s Wild Horse and Burro Herds

In August of 2018 the Bureau of Land Management began a roundup in the Red Desert Complex of Wyoming. The Herd Management Areas in the Complex are Green Mountain, Stewart Creek, Lost Creek, Crooks Mountain and Antelope Hills. They were planning to remove 2670 wild horses in total, and the last roundup had been in 2011. The BLM stopped about halfway through on August 17 because they had nowhere else to put the rest of the horses they proposed to remove. So 1444 wild horses were rounded up, 25 were released back into Green Mountain including 12 mares who were given PZP birth control. The bulk of the horses removed were from Green Mountain, with about 300 from Stewart Creek. Ten wild horses died during this roundup, including some foals who were literally run to death in the heat.
Now the Bureau of Land Management is planning to continue this roundup. Because it was paused they do not need to do any more Environmental Assessment, any more public comment. They can just start at their convenience, which turns out to be some time in October of this year. They plan to remove over 1000 wild horses – likely over 1500.
Just to state the obvious, come on people, wake up, there is a Pandemic! You are going to ignore that and pretend that chasing wild horses with a helicopter and separating them from their families and homes, killing some, sending most of them to be warehoused for the rest of their lives in a feedlot situation for millions of taxpayer dollars is a priority? Surely millions of dollars being squandered in wild horse roundups happening now in Utah and Nevada and soon in Wyoming could be better used helping people who are at risk people who are losing their jobs, their homes and their lives?
Of course, our government will say this money has been allocated to remove the horses. Yes and that is a problem – it is not a priority! These horses who are on public lands currently are not posing a threat to anything except the cattle ranchers’ greed to put more and more livestock on our public lands. And surely it has occurred to someone that what a great time to remove these horses – when most people are staying at home and trying to stay safe.

The plan this time is to return 150 wild horses to Stewart Creek with the mares being injected with PZP birth control first. There is a group working with the BLM who will be continuing to dart the mares in Stewart Creek to keep the population down.
We do not know where the approximately 1500 wild horses will be sent after the roundup. If they are sent to BLM owned short term holding facilities then it will be easy for members of the public to adopt them, if the BLM allows visitors during COVID. But most of the long term holding facilities are on private land and these do not allow the public to visit.
I have to say in my opinion, we should be focusing on keeping ourselves safe and the Bureau of Land Management should be working on ways to manage our wild horses on our public lands where they belong, not rounding up and removing thousands more this fall.
The wild horses in the Red Desert Complex and beautiful, thriving and much safer remaining with their families in their homes. This should not happen. This needs to STOP.

As an American Citizen, I am tired of being ignored by my representatives in Congress regarding the elimination of wild horses from our lands. I am sent a letter that says they will get back to me on this issue. NEVER HAPPENS. !!! As far as I am concerned you are cruel and inhuman. You should be there at the round ups watching carefully, you need to put yourself in the place of their horses., ride with those horses all the way to slaughter. Wake up if you dont stop this you are truely bad,cruel, and yes sadly a crook!. Ihave always respected and had the greatest respect for those who represent us. I know it’s a very difficult job. But ignoring this especially the rules regarding wildhorse management, I consider you disrespectful to We Americans. In case you cant tell I am mad for what you have done and not done.

The way these horrific roundups are going & then giving mates the birth control,there will be no more wild horses in a few years. I agree with you people we to leave those wild horses to roam. Ranchers can share their land. Before the ranchers arrived. The wildhorses helped the other animals to survive out there. So the BLM needs to stop these roundups. Because some of the horses are getting injured and there’s no reason for them to be hurting these creatures.
If there were no ranchers running cattle on the lands no one would care about the horses being on the land. Follow the money. I put my money where my heart is. I cause no harm to any animal by eating a plant based diet. If we all did, the planet would not be taxed with the destruction that cattle do and the wild horses would run free. Did you know that horses dont kill out the natural springs which provide them water? Cattle pollute and destroys natural springs. Springs are the life force . I have walked the lands of the Oregon desert and seen first hand what is going on and the ranchers are not fencing these valuable areas, they are running more cows than they are suppose to and for longer than they are suppose to. It’s destroying habitat. Perhaps if that is happening in Oregon, it is happening in other states as well. Horses don’t have the severe impact on the land. The cattle industry report inaccurate information about the horses that I dont believe is accurate. The entire thing is a travesty. The planet will survive but with man’s stupidy, we may not. Meanwhile, seeing any animal suffer is one too many.

This is our (the public) land the f…..g cattle ranchers are using our public land for almost free grazing and their greed is what is pushing out the horses and burrows I think we need to use helicopters and atvs to round them up chasing them for miles over rough terrain then putting in small corrals familys SEPERATED and leave until someone buys each and everyone take water away they can eat what they can find. Let them know exactly how our horses feel by way of feeling themselves !! BLM ARE ALL CROOKS CONTROLLED BY BIG MONEY THAT’S WHAT IT IS AL ABOUT. Greed…cattlemen need to use their own land not public lands for their cattle…horses need room on public land so we can still enjoy our visits to their land to see them wild and free…they are going the way of the bison…expendable for profit. SAD.
I love these horses. They deserve to be free. It is cruel and a waste of our taxpayers money to be messing around with this. Save our horses and our land.
Ranchers need to be MANDATED to keep their cattle on their own land or lease from other private landowners. Grow their own feed if necessary. Get your destructive livestock…the TRUE invasive species … off of our public lands.
I think this BLM must be dismantled, vast majority of the employees are pro-slaughter lobbyist as well as the Deputy director and director of BLM. BLM is corrupt to the core , profiteering off the death of our wild beautiful iconic American Heritages! This evil gov. Agency are making secret deals selling our wild horses to slaughter, in Mexico, Canada and abroad. In 2011 BLM considered selling (2000) of our wild to Russia for prey for Siberian tigers and Amur Leopards in a pilot program. But decided Not at this time, so what exactly did , Not at this time mean…… In May of 2018 , published on website in July, Interior issues memo changing the BLM sales policy to allow for a truck , of (24) horses , to be purchased with title transfer immediately. BLM doesn’t follow up to see if these wild horses have gone to slaughter. From Fall of 2016 to today, BLM’s inventory of wild horses in holding dropped over 20,000, even though removals continue. So where, and what happened to these 20,000 horses, BLM?! We must Demand BLM to be dismantled , and a thorough investigation ! These wild horses and public lands belong to We American tax -payers and We will continue to be ignored, not heard because selling our wild horses for slaughter is a multimillion dollar enterprise for all evil partners involved! Our wild horses are getting slaughtered by greedy evil man kind and these evil man kind must be Legally held accountable ! Demand the dismantle of , BLM, THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE OUR WILD HORSES!

I have to say that this whole situation makes me ill. I try not to read all the comments because it’s so upsetting. I too have sent letters and signed petitions sent to BLM. I don’t know what it will take to actually make a difference with the government. It’s so heartbreaking and unfair, they don’t deserve this, I wish something else could be done for them. Please leave them alone, stop torturing these beautiful creatures!!
