BLM Announces Plan to Destroy the Onaqui Mountain Wild Horse Herd in 2019

Yesterday the BLM issued a press release on its Decision Record for the Onaqui Mountain Wild Horse Herd in Utah. The BLM says “The objectives of the approved population control measures are to slow the herd’s population growth and achieve and maintain a balance between wild horses on the range and other public land resources.”

Their plan is to remove 465 wild horses from the Herd Management Area in 2019 using both bait trapping and helicopters. Currently the population is estimated to be 505 wild horses, but the BLM is estimating that with foals born in 2019 that the population will be at 586, and they want to bring the herd down to the low end of the Appropriate Management Level of 121 wild horses. As usual, the BLM does not allow for any foal mortality, which can be as high as 40% in the first year of a foal’s life, nor do they allow for deaths of older horses during the winter. The BLM does not say WHEN they plan to do this in 2019 – it could be as early as February or as late as the fall. They cannot use helicopters during foaling season which according to the BLM starts March 1.
If the BLM brings the numbers of the herd down to 121 wild horses, this is far below the number necessary to maintain genetic viability, which according to the leading wild horse geneticist Dr. Gus Cothren is 150 adult wild horses. This risk to the genetic health and survival of this herd will be compounded by the continuing plans of the BLM to use birth control, PZP and Gonacon, to control the birth rate of a herd whose numbers will already be too low.
Ten wild horse advocacy groups including Wild Horse Freedom Federation as well as 7872 individuals submitted comments regarding this plan earlier in the year, and there was tremendous public outcry against this plan. This herd is much loved by members of the American public who come from all over the country to visit, observe and photograph this herd.
Volunteers had begun documenting and training to give birth control to the mares in this herd in order to control the population, and keep the horses in their herd management area with their families where they belong. But the BLM disregarded the wishes of the public and plan to proceed with decimating this herd.
As usual, the BLM has no concern for what happens to these horses once they are removed. If they proceed as they have been doing with herds rounded up in Wyoming this last year, the youngest will be offered for adoption, but likely the public will not even be able to see, let along adopt or purchase all the adult horses over 5 if they get shipped to the private facilities like in Axtell, Utah or Bruneau, Idaho. Instead these horses will be shipped to holding facilities or sold by the semi-load and end up at slaughter.
This is wrong. This plan is cruel, inhumane, dangerous to the continued heath of the herd and against the wishes of the people who care about these wild horses. America’s wild horses do not belong to the BLM, they belong to all of us, and they deserve to live their lives wild and free in their families in their homes, and managed in the most humane and least invasive way possible.

Actually unfortunately we do not want to transfer control of our wild horses to the 10 western states they live in – Chris Stewart Representative of Utah who was just re-elected has been the most outspoken proponent of getting rid of all the wild horses and killing the horses in holding. State control is not the answer but another agency who would manage our wild horses to preserve them would be a good solution.
Maybe Chris Stewart ought to be destroyed just the horses. At least one problem would be solved. I hate animal haters!!

Cattle compete with the animals that belong there like the horses, they do damage to land that is cleared of trees to graze cattle and they produce massive amounts green house gasses which are warming our planet. Even though this type of action has been going on for years the recent policies of the current government to acquire public lands, to cut down the sizes of our natural forests and parks, to encourage fracking and other policies detrimental to our environment does not bode well for these horses. And, in all reality, these horses are interbreeding which does no good for the health and wellness of the herd overall. Culling the herd down to a manageable level and removing stallions that are allowed to breed with their mothers or siblings is necessary. No, I don’t like HOW the BLM does this and the fact that some of the horses will be sold to slaughter, however keeping all of them is simply not possible. I have raised, trained and shown horses all my life… they are an important part of my life, but I know that in order to maintain the integrity of the herd, some things simply have to be put in place which allows for better herd management. PZP (birth control) has been studied and used effectively for over 30 years. Definetly not Trump’s fault, many presidents have been around in the span of 30 years. It is the BLM’s responsibility. However, they have received a lot of criticism for implementing the birth control methods. In my opinion, we need to step back and let the BLM use birth control or other sterilization measures. It sure beats the alternative of selling these horses for slaughter.

I certainly don’ agree with killing the horses, but one thing you don’t understand is that they were not here “naturally.” Horses were left by the Spanish over 400 years ago and have threatened to crowd out other natural wildlife like the bison, even after the short period when Europeans were over killing bison herds. The Comanches learned to raise and trade horses for other goods with other tribes, settlers from the East and the South.
Now, there is very little horse-trade and fewer predators to reduce the ever-growing herds. The have to be reduced to conserve the lands, but I do believe there could be better ways to do it than destroying them as is done now. I wonder if perhaps there isn’t other land where they could be relocated without causing similar problems in a new location. That would be my preference, in addition to being able to adopt some myself. Right now, I don’t even have a yard to keep a dog. I support any organization that is willing to legitimately increase public awareness without wasting donations, but even that seems to be an equally wide-spread problem lately.

They were born in North America fifty million years ago as eohipus and mutated into equus caballus(modern horse).They have as much right to be here as any native creature. The slaughter and extinction of any species is an affront to nature.That goes for the Bison that you claim were crowding out other wild life.

I believe that raising animals for human consumption is at the bottom of our major environmental (climate change, soil depletion, monoculture, Monsanto), health (obesity, cancer, etc.), and social ills (greed, indifference to suffering, etc.). And it is business and it is political. Wake the fuck up, America. I don’t know how to convince people to change their entire belief systems. I want us to save these horses. I want us to save all the horses. I feel helpless. What can I do besides write letter to politicians and agencies? If we knew when the roundups were and camped out on this Utah land to stop the traps and helicopters, would that work? How many people would it take?

Is there any benefit in taking a direct action, meaning, if we knew when the roundups were going to happen, could we have enough people on the ground to stop the traps and helicopters? How many acres are we talking about, how might we get the info we need, and is there any interest in doing something like this? Many of us believe that raising animals for human consumption is at the root of major environmental, health and social ills. Most of us do not believe this. I am fucking tired of majority rule. The wild horses will suffer and be killed to make room for cattle ranchers so every lazy and greedy and unthinking American can pick up his Big Mac. I am done with crying and wishing things were different. What can we do?
Through Congress and through lawsuits are the only ways to make legal, lasting change. Getting arrested at a roundup will only make the BLM more restrictive on public access and less likely to let members of the public observe anything at all. Education and media attention do make a difference.

Yes, Carol is right. The modern horse is the genetic descendent of Genus Equus, which originated in North America around 4 million years ago and became extinct in N.A. about 11,000 years ago. However before this time, they migrated and spread to Africa, Asia and Europe.
They were reintroduced by the Spanish, and the horse cultures of our Native American people were born.
These horses should have the status of endangered species. Why they have been harassed, murdered, and disrespected so badly throughout these last two centuries is mainly because of government control and exploitation, as in the plight of Native Americans. Freedom has it’s adversaries as we all know.
Horses were here before crossing the land bridge to Russia and Asia. They were brought back by the Spanish.

I can understand needing to control the population, but this is beyond control. These animals are our heritage, our history; people come from far and wide to view these amazing horses and their beauty. These horse represent our freedoms on our land. Perhaps the government should focus more or human population control and the ridiculous funds spent on welfare and food stamps.

They are the agency that manages our wild horses. No one ever said they do a good job managing them. There are not enough people to take all the wild horses if removed from their homes on our public lands. They need to stay there.
Exactly Carol Walker! There are not enough people to take all the wild horses roaming this country on our public lands. The minimal fee the BLM charges is nothing, its only $125, and still they can’t find enough homes for them. Even if they gave them away for free you’d still have the same problem. Free usually means people more readily dispose of them and take them to a sales yard where their fate is unknown. The BLM is charged with managing horse herd populations, and they don’t do it to everyone’s satisfaction, like terrorizing them with helicopter roundups. They have to manage OUR public lands for all public uses, horseback riding, hiking, off-roading, camping, rock hounds, existing wildlife which includes wild horses; and now renewable energy gets to use (or destroy) it as well. Not sure what the overall answer to this problem is, but programs like Mustang Makeover, or sending some to prisons for prisoners to gentle/train, birth control methods, all combined help a little in their own way. My husband and I manage a herd of approximately 100 wild horses, we were up to 115 for a bit, 159 horses have been adopted out since 2002, its an ongoing battle to try and keep the herd size down to what the (private) land can support. 150 horses may be the genetically viable statistic, but if the land can’t support them, they will die of starvation. There aren’t enough people to continually feed them when the range is barren. Yes, they are beautiful to look at, photograph, and watch in awe, but “let them be free” means, they continue to breed, and breed, and overgraze. It isn’t just cattle doing it, we don’t have cattle and our hillsides and meadows are barren.
Horses 10 and over are being sold by the truckload for $10 per head. This is NOT the solution. 150 adult horses on a 200,000 or 300,000 acre herd management area is not overburdening the land. Humane, reversible birth control and retiring livestock grazing leases are viable solutions. Rounding them up and warehousing them and selling them to kill buyers is not.
Amen to that… if anyone has ever seen a Mexican slaughter house where the horses are stabbed to cut the spinal cord and sometimes dismembered alive, it is the worst nightmare you can ever imagine!
There are multi-thousands of American horses being shipped across the borders of Mexico and Canada for slaughter for HUMAN CONSUMPTION each year. Canada ships live horses to Japan for SUSHI.
Our Mustangs are a primary target for the kill buyers that are always swarming like sharks at every BLM sale auction. This is a major result of the BLM’s mismanagement and lack of conscience, and the secrecy involved is appalling.

I am voicing my opinion in opposition to the BLM’s effort to remove this band of horses from Utah. 80% of American people approve of leaving the horses and burros alone. I dont know for a fact that the BLM still considers form letters – no matter how many there are – as ONE comment! I’m betting thats the case still. It is also very frustrating to read comments here & on RT’s blog from people who care, but are under the mistaken impression that putting those comments on your blog, RT’s blog or Facebook does any good at all. 40 years ago I was able to see wild horses in Wyoming running free. It was a thrilling site. Inspiring the power and determination to survive. There was a white stallion that protected his herd that had a flowing mane that nearly touched the ground and his tail did also so that when he ran it was a flowing snow storm thundering across the plain.
It was the highlight of my week when I was able to see the herd and that stallion. time marched on and the BLM cam captured sold and killed all of the magnificent pieces of history and living wonder. I never got to share the horses with my children or grandchildren. Please don’t keep the future of children to come from seeing the wonder and joy of that great living symbol of freedom.

I would never want to see the mustang dissapear from America’s public lands, but in order for them to live happily, they must be controlled. You can only blame yourselves for having fenced off lands, roads so they can’t migrate to better food sources, and constant farm lands overwhelming the area. Because of this, a lot of horses are held up in holding pens. So instead of rattling on about the company who looks out for the land and the horses welfare being demons, look at what you have done and can do. If you’ve got land, rescue a few from a holding pen and let them live on your land. Without control in this day and age of man, the specific places where the herd lives will be so overgrazed it’ll become impossible.for vegetation to grow back.
No the answer is not removing the horses. They belong on our public lands. There have been volunteers in place to work with the BLM in controlling the numbers of this herd using birth control the plan was in place then suddenly the BLM decides to remove most of the horses. Yes the BLM is to blame and should be held to account.
Chincoteague Va – capture the horses and sell to ranchers to raise money to keep their horses on Assateague Island – you should do the same .
There Ägare not enough people to adopt the horses in the 10 western states that the BLM manages them in. Chino Teague is a very small herd with a controllled population managed by a different agency.
Time to round up the BLM and thin their group down . All the money spent could be used to help these horses be free and maintain the land.

I understand maintaining herd levels to prevent overgrazing and starvation of the horses. I saw these problems first hand back in the 80’s in Nevada. Seems the birth control route combined with natural attrition should bring the herd back to a manageable level withing 5 years. Then they could allow breeding say every 3rd year. I suppose a sensible plan like this would be totally out of the question.

They do not need to do permenant methods of sterilization such as gelding. Reversible birth control, PZP, works and can easily be given to these mares.

The BLM is the Bureau of Land Management, which is part of the Dapartment of the Interior. It was set up by the Taylor Grazing Act in the 40s to manage our public lands and they administer grazing leases, oil and gas leases and then in the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act was passed in Congress they were designated as managing our wild horses, a role they bitterly regret.

This is unacceptable! Over the years my family has adopted 5 BLM horses, 2 were from Utah. Why can’t they just round up the younger ones and let people adopt them? They are our living history and some of the most beautiful horses in existence. Let them live!

This is ridiculous! I don’t think that people realize that these horses only have a certain amount of land with forage and water. If you just leave them there UN-maintained they will die of dehydration and starvation, that is more cruel than a slaughter house at least the slaughter house its less pain, imagine if you died of starvation and lack of water. You wont get rid of the cattle industry it is the biggest in the world, and horses over 5 get adopted all the time in the white mountain and green mountain HMA they have 15 year old horses for adoption and they are selling.
It was never the plan to NOT manage the population – manage it humanely using birth control but NLM decided they want the horses gone. And with over 12,000 wild horses rounded up this year and about 2500 adopted no there are not enough people to take all of the horses. They need to be managed humanely in the least invasive manner on the range on public lands where they belong.
And What is the alternative answer. Great, let’s hate the BLM plan, but what is a viable alternative? The area they are in cannot sustain the herd size and continued growth. It is not enough to gripe if there is no good plan to keep them healthy and with enough food. We can’t keep all the herds in all of the areas without a sensible population control plan.
There is a good plan that the BLM had agreed to, volunteers were ready to dart the horses and administer birth control – then BLM changed its plans.

Only the young horses will be available for adoption, not the older horses who are in danger of being sold to buyers who will send them to slaughter. If they are limiting the number of wild horses roaming the land, then why are they NOT making the rangers limit the number of cattle they have that are also using the land the wild horses are? Every state has farmers/rangers raising beef for themselves as well as selling to stores. Therefore, these rangers should be told: “due to the public lands rangers/farmers are only permitted to graze a certain number of cattle.” These rangers also complain about the wolf or coyote killing their livestock and in some states these rangers are given so much money if their livestock is killed. Gee why are the animals doing this? Maybe because of the greed of some people wanting to have control over more land. Seriously, the planet gives the land, trees, plants, flowers, water to us FREE. Yet whom is the one that charges us to have the use of the land?!!!

Utah is a huge state how can a herd of 505 wild horses a problem! A God fairing bible state needs to stop this BLM destructive plan to slaughter Wild Horses. Man-unkind has done enough damage to our earth and its creatures, we must seek more humane measures in “managing” the lands that we live on and learn to co-exist as we would like to be treated. Karma rolls around.
The real state public lands issue is about the distribution of oil lease revenues not cows or horses, native species etc. Left unchecked horse populations will destroy the natural environment. The cattle and sheep allocations have been sharply reduced over the years. Cattle and sheep can be moved off a site when environmental issues dictate. How are donations being spent? Many of these organizations are disappointing in their use of donated resources.
The cattle and sheep usage still outnumber wild horses by 40-1. The studies that the BLM does on grazing impacts on our public lands do not even consider livestock grazing – any damage to the land is blamed on wild horses. The use of donations from reputable groups most of the time recently has either been in birth control, water hauling, or lawsuits to stop the sterilization and destruction of our wild herds.

I am going to write my Senators, Congress people as well as the President to ask that they follow the policy of utilizing birth control and natural attrition on these wild herds. Even sadder are the plights of animals corralled by the BLM – and their numbers are unbelievably high. People say they want to adopt them? Then ADOPT them! A “nice” solution, but not particularly viable. My horses are pretty expensive to maintiain and I am lucky enough to have room for a couple at my home. What I would really like to see are monies spent on birth control and wataer hauling, and NOT on attorneys and lawsuits. Yes, Carol is right. The modern horse is the genetic descendent of Genus Equus, which originated in North America around 4 million years ago and became extinct in N.A. about 11,000 years ago. However before this time, they migrated and spread to Africa, Asia and Europe.
They were reintroduced by the Spanish, and the horse cultures of our Native American people were born.
These horses should have the status of endangered species. Why they have been harassed, murdered, and disrespected so badly throughout these last two centuries is mainly because of government control and exploitation, as in the plight of Native Americans. There are multi-thousands of American horses being shipped across the borders of Mexico and Canada for slaughter for HUMAN CONSUMPTION each year. Canada ships live horses to Japan for SUSHI.

The most sensitive and beautiful animal on this planet helped us in war, help with keeping law and order, to get us everywhere we need to go with all our shit and hauled it until sent to the knackers yard. After thousands of years of us breaking them in and sticking things in their mouth and yanking it and racing them to death whipping them, you can’t even leave the last herds to do their natural behaviours in their natural habitat but instead torture and killing them too, breaking their backs and taking away their beloved family? Psychopathic tendencies are ingrained in the human race now. These beings have all the same organs as us and a nervous system we can see their trauma and pain for thousands of years and just don’t care. That proves we are the last to deserve this beautiful blue gem as our habitat and because of the likes of you, when Mother Nature deals our karma, which we are so very close to causing ourselves, human beings deserve no mercy.
If killing an entire herd is responsible land management we need to rethink that. The only reason I see for this is MONEY. Please learn better management! Don’t kill the herd!

Did you know that Utah encompasses 22.9 MILLION acres of public lands that are BLM managed, about 42% of the entire state? Surely there would be land to relocate the Onaqui herds as an alternative to the brutal helicopter Roundup, incarceration, and further torture of potential slaughter, at the outrageous cost of millions of dollars to the taxpayers.
To encourage these people to reconsider this unforgivable removal, restate all of your comments to them directly. Until their ears bleed.

If BML needs the money so much why don’t they do a fundraiser to protect the wild horses?
The BLM does not need money – they are receiving taxpayer money to fund the program. This is not about their money it is about powerful competing interests like Livestock Grazing and Extraction. Mixed use of our public lands mean many uses should share in theory but the horses are being pushed out.
why do they not relocate them not all like they plain, look into other opinion like see if other countries might want them but they do not need to destroy them. even the va might be interested in them for patient care or returning vets

Utterly unacceptable and barbaric as with much of the US approach to wildlife. We are vastly over populated. There should be concrete boundaries, people cannot keep breeding and stripping the earth at the sale of all others. Where nature is left to its incredible self everything is balanced. Humans are in the main a disgrace.
This is horrible. I pray that the BLM does not proceed with this decision. These horses are God’s beautiful creation. We have done enough damage to our wildlife already.
This absolutely makes me sick! I live in Reno, Nevada and we have wild mustangs visiting my neighborhood frequently especially in the winter months because of the grassy lawns, wetland areas and its warmer during that time. They are also in the foothills around Virginia City and Carson City. We have had causalities unfortunately over the years as they cross streets and busy intersections but we are always cautious, leave them alone and respect them. They are a part our American history and I highly doubt they are causing too much destruction to the land. This is the BLM; a corrupt and poorly managed government agency who only cares about politics, money, kickbacks, and has total disregard for these beautiful souls. Leave them alone!!!
Stop!! Let them be wild and free and stop interfering. They have been around and on this land longer than we have. Stand up for these horses, they can’t stand up for themselves.

There is nothing so beautiful as seeing these magnificent animals running free..I know lots of people that room on their land, give them to us!!
If there’s no choice but to thin the heard, and I don’t agree it’s even necessary, here’s an approach to possibly explore if it hasn’t been yet. The Beagle Freedom project realized that if taxpayer dollars were being used to fund labs that used dogs for testing, taxpayers should have the right to adopt those dogs prior to euthanasia. Many states agreed and have passed laws requiring the dogs be put up for adoption prior to being slaughtered. It’s an interesting approach on the Federal Level with the wild horses. Whether it’s feasible and whether homes could be found for the number of horses is a serious question.
The younger horses are offered for adoption. The real solution is to keep them on our public lands and control the numbers of wild horses using humane, reversible methods of birth control.
Can we start a petition please?? Can we create an educational angle to help these Kages tic animals? Currently there are steps being taken for fertilization. Can’t we hold off and start a petition??! This is what makes America what it is-killing off our wildlife -rare and wild isn’t a solution.

You all know someone has mistakenly reposted this as a Black Lives Matter issue. Please spell out your acronym. Facebook thinks Black Lives Matters activists are out to destroy horses. I highly doubt theyll be in the plains of Wyoming hunting horses. BLM is likely Bureau of Land Management or something like that. But under our current climate i don’t need some old idiot yelling at me because they think I’m killing horses.

It is the Bureau of Land Management established in the 1940s and I have been using the acronym for the past 14 years and this iteration of the first I have heard of folks getting confused about is it refers g to Black Lives Matter. So I promise I will make an effort to spell it out in my blog titles. But at least it means more people are hearing about the challenges facing our wild horses.

This is ridiculous! If they need to thin the herd then round them up and sell them to people who will take care of them. If this is just another stupid move then everyone needs to get involved to stop this. There is no reason to kill perfectly good horses that have the right to be there. They could also be moved to an Indian Reservation to live out their days in peace from idiots.
What can people do?? Sooo many want to stop this. Can the public donate to buy land to creat a private space/ park to protect these majestic creatures? Can you network with the folks in the OBX who work to protect the wild horses there? Can we create a petition ASAP?

This is so unbelievably heartbreaking! Why do you want to kill something so magnificent! These animals are the reason we have a successful history! They help humans when humans are not deserving! The more we kill the more the earth will eliminate the human race. These animals deserve to be left alone and to live freely more than the people who get to live their lives in a prison who have done unspeakable things! Please leave these horses in peace. There has been enough slaughter in the name of greed. Special interest groups, most specially cattle ranchers, have wreaked enough damage on our herds. The decimation of our horses and burros is done so that the cattle ranchers can eradicate horses from the open range so their cattle can graze. Well, cattle outnumber horses by the thousands, and soon, there won’t be one horse left. Horses suffer horrendously, are hunted down by the BLM, transported in overcrowded trucks, and held in government holding pens. Horrible conditions. Most are sent to auction, those sent to auction most likely go to slaughter, bought by kill buyers. It’s time the government stepped in for the good of the horses and heard our voice, the people who wish to stop the suffering and save our horses, instead of bending to the side of cattle ranchers and their greed.

These horses belong to the public not the BLM or the ranchers. The horses and the land are what bring people to visit . Don’t take them away from us, do the right thing and make the ranchers find there own land for their cattle and sheep.

This is illegal. These horses belong to the American people. And American people want them to stay on their land, which also belong to the American people. We do not want cows there, we want our wild horses to stay, where they are right now.
