The Bureau of Land Management just announced plans to destroy three wild herds of horses in the Checkerboard Area of Wyoming’s Red Desert. These wild horses are federally protected and living on 2 million acres in southeastern Wyoming.
The proposed Resource Management Plan would zero out the Salt Wells Creek Herd, the Great Divide Basin Herd, and roundup up and surgically sterilize the entire White Mountain, meaning within a few years this herd will be gone as well. All three of these iconic herds have large sections of “checkerboard” of public and private lands throughout much of the area, which since 2011 has led to several lawsuits. The Rock Springs Grazing Association, the most powerful grazing association in the country wants all of the wild horses removed. Instead of participating in land swaps that would allow consolidation of the public lands that wild horses roam on, they want all of the land, private AND public for grazing their livestock and the wild horses removed completely even though America’s public lands are “mixed-use” by definition.
The Adobe Town Herd Management Area, which has only a small fraction of Checkerboard and over 478,000 acres will have its Appropriate Management Level (which is the range from low to high of wild horses allowed in the area) cut almost in half, from 610-800 to 225-450.
The plan will result in the removal of over 4000 wild horses from their homes and families and freedom, and 40% of wild horses habitat gone forever.
Changing the Land Use plans as a vehicle for wiping out entire populations of wild horses defies their federally protected status. And the issue here is bigger than wild horses in Wyoming – this may very well serve as BLM’s new template for eradicating all of America’s treasured wild horses.
I will be partnering with the American Wild Horse Campaign in the upcoming legal battle as I have on all the previous lawsuits to protect the wild horses in this area. This cruel and devastating plan that benefits one powerful special interest group cannot be allowed by the American people, 80% of whom want wild horses and burros to continue to roam free on our public lands.

I cannot believe they hatred BLM has for mustangs – I never knew how badly those horses have been treated by BLM – it’s no wonder they are going over fences and shake unstoppable at adoptions – they are hated and they know it / please let them go back to their homes and families

It was my great joy and pleasure while working as a surveyor working in south west Wyoming to observe two herds of wild mustangs in the wilds of the sagebrush prairies where the deer and the antelope played. We saw them everyday for two months. These beautiful wild horses are a vital part of our western heritage and history. They need to be preserved and not rounded up by helicopters and put in corrals to languish. They need to be free. I’ve also had the great pleasure to own a beautiful paint mustang who had been abused by the BLM trail hands. I named him Scooter, and he was the smartest horse I’ve ever worked with. When I moved to Las Vegas & realized it was way too hot for my boy, I gave him to a horse trainer friend in southern Utah who rides him in those beautiful trails to this day. These beautiful animals are paying the price for bad government policies, and the BLM’s incompetence and ineptness (who are in the pockets of some of the cattlemen and sheep interests). This must stop…let your voices be heard!

The Wild and Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 is the law. Numbers of those animals in Horse Management Areas (HMAs) need to be preserved to abide by the law. That is what the BLM is tasked to do. The BLM is not beholding to the cattle industry or the cattlemens association.
Wild horses, and all wildlife, needs to be preserved and protected.

I just attended the Wild Mustang Makeover in Ft Worth, TX with my 15 year old granddaughter. She rides and knows more about horses than I would dare say any of you that want to destroy theses smart and trainable horses, will ever know. Trainers from all over the United States trained 60

Stop rounding up OUR Wild Horses and slaughtering them. There are better solutions.

It is possible to train and adopt them but they are better off being managed where they live in their homes on our public lands.
Leave the beautiful wild horses alone they deserve to live wild and free. They were here first just like the native Americans and they were almost exterminated and everything taken from them. Why cant everyone live together including gods creatures in harmony.
Protecting them entails rounding then up, giving then medical treatment, and finding them homes off the range (while ensuring they are well-cared for ). The BLM is not killing these horses, but nature is. All 4 of my mustangs acted like they’ve never seen a blade of grass or a tank of water when they first arrived. If these were feral dogs instead, you would be petitioning for roundups, neuters, and programs to find them homes. Until you’ve adopted a wild horse for yourself, you aren’t helping them.
No that is not what protecting them entails. Protecting them as per the 1071 Wild Free Roaming horse and Burro act means managing them humanely where they live on our public lands.
Please let these horses live, they are families they love, they play, they think, they reason
They’re patient as they teach their young and their family always comes first. God made them this way, to live free, not to be hunted and driven from their home and killed or slaughtered for food. How can the BLM break these laws?, if I went and rounded the wild horses up, they would through my crazy ass in Federal prison, THE BLM IS TRIPLING THEOR MONEY, 1 RENTING OUT OUR LANDS TO CATTLE RANCHER, 2 TAKING TAXES FROM ME AND YOU, 3 WHEN THEY HAVE ROUND UPS AND SALE OUR WILD HORSES TO SLAUGHTER IN CHINA AND CANADA, THE BLM IS MAKING ALOT OF MONEY!!!! There are supposed laws in effect to protect America’s wild horses and burros. Follow the laws, not the cattle ranchers who pay for the grazing land. Contrary to the cattlemen’s arguments, horses and cattle can co-exist. But the horses tend to graze at higher altitudes. SAVE THE PROTECTED WILD HORSES!!

BLM has done more then enough of all these round ups and the ones who die or are killed during the round up. Time has come to leave them alone, go after the ranchers who have not paid for being on the land .
When will the BLM/Gov’t follow the laws that were created to PROTECT OUR WILD HORSES! You are mandated to protect these herds and if you don’t honor the laws why are you not prosecuted or removed from office??? A stop has got to be placed on this total disregard of the rule of law. Your job mandates you follow the law and the will of the people…do your job!
Stop this madness now! The American people are fed up with the actions against our wild horses and other wildlife! These ranchers have had free rein on our public land so they can graze more cattle! But it’s gone on long enough! When they start organizing the removable of herd after herd of OUR horses to make way of more grazing animals, the American people say ENOUGH ALREADY!! Nothing could be more beautiful or precious than these wild horses. They are a part of out history and deserve to be kept alive and free!

Please don’t take them away. They are the most wonderful animals. They deserve to be there for everyone. that land belongs to all of us. Please look into their eyes,how could you kill them?

Our beloved horses should be left alone. Some day the BLM will be treated as they have treated our horses. You will not be foregiven.
The people of the United States have an interest in and a right to protect the national treasures of this country. That includes our wild horses. Just as the buffalo were once decimated, our beautiful wild horses could be wiped out if the gathering and slaughter continues. Our government should be protecting these horses as a national treasure. If they are eradicated, it will be a true loss to this country and our future generations. People will look back with scorn at the officials who let it happen. Please don’t let that bleak future become a reality. There are already more cattle than humans grazing and using up precious resources. More land for cattle grazing is absolutely unnecessary, particularly at the expense of losing this wild horse population. Alternative A or B should be taken to preserve the horses for our country and our future generations. Alternative C is a gross injustice to the US people and to those horses that are supposed to be protected by the BLM and other US government agencies.

What an answer, destroy the icon of the American West. Could have slowed size of herds a long time ago. Federally protected is Federally protected.
There is so much land there that it is insane to think that we need to remove any animals.
