Wild Horses are a National Treasure – An Evening with Carol Walker May 12 at Longmont Public Library
May 10, 2016Wild Horse Alert: Wild Horses and Burros in Danger from “Stewart Amendment”
June 16, 2016Update – will go to full Committee
The Appropriations Committee will be voting by the end of June, possibly as early as next week in Washington D.C. on the BLM’s Fiscal Year 2017 Budget Request.
We need you to send your comments in opposition to the Administration’s BLM policy changes affecting the Wild Horse and Burro Program. They want to do this through the Appropriations Bill.
The BLM is calling for changes to the Wild Horse and Burro program that will set a dangerous precedent for many years to come.
BLM’s proposal would allow for unlimited transfers of wild horses to other Federal, State and local government agencies for use as work animals. The transfer of wild horses under the provision would be unlimited, would be subject to immediate transfer of ownership (instead of a one-year wait required by the 1971 Act) and the horses would lose their status as a wild free-roaming horse or burro as defined by the Act.
There is grave concern from the American public that without protections, these horses may be sold to slaughter and that this could be a convenient way to get rid of the horses and burros.
The proposal also indicates the BLM’s plans to use permanent and dangerous sterilization techniques to control populations of free-roaming horses and burros.
However, there is no overpopulation of wild horses and burros on our public land. Most herds, 78%, have numbers below the level necessary to sustain genetic viability which is 150 adults. Wild horses and burros have lost 22 million acres where they were originally found at the time the 1971 Act. Livestock grazing outnumbers wild horses in all of the Herd Management Areas where they are supposed to be managed as the “principle species” by 100 – 1.
Protection of our wild horses and burros is Federal, and their care and management should never be transferred to state and local governments, many of whom have been aggressively calling for the elimination of wild horses from their states. Wild horses and burros are vulnerable to ending up at slaughter under this misguided plan.
The sterilization research that is being performed on wild mares is so dangerous that it would be unsafe even being performed in a sterile environment on domestic mares, let alone on wild mares in a filthy holding facility or out in the field. Sterilization is a permanent solution, and will lead the end of wild horses on our public lands. This is truly management to extinction.
If the BLM is concerned about the growing numbers of wild horses in holding facilities, then they need to STOP rounding them up and not proceed with the roundups of thousands more wild horses in Wyoming this fall of 2016. Our wild horses need to managed on the range, not rounded up and removed and warehoused at greater and greater taxpayer expense.
Please call and email and fax your comments to these Committee members, and please pass this along:

WE HAVE TO STOP THE BLM and the SLAUGHTER, and every other atrocity they are doing……We are going to have to step up voices in Washington and have them consider we will not support then, if they DO NOT SUPPORT OUR MUSTANGS……I have already called all mine!
This slaughter on out privileged animals need to end…these are God’s creations and they are not meant for a food source. People like to involve themselves in torture, murdering, pain, etc…they can’t admit their lifes are out if control.
Protect our wild horses & burros. They need their habitat more than the rich ranchers. Keep them free for future generations.
BLM……..WE ARE APPALLED BY YOUR SLAUGHTER OF OUR HERITAGE>>>>>OUR WILD MUSTANGS, and you are NOT doing the job, the BLM was formed to do……….YoUr management and actions are UNACCEPTABLE TO SAY THE LEAST. WE ARE GAINING IN NUMBERS AND WILL BRING THIS TO A SATISFACTORY RESULT . which is PROPER MANAGEMENT AND CARE OF OUR WILD MUSTANGS> …..Get it?????
How dare the BLM think to do such a thing as to kill the public’s horses. These horses do not belong to a certain person, but to the public of America and that means they belong to all of us. The BLM can not make decisions for our wild mustangs that could endanger them or make then go extinct. My own horse is part mustang and I could never imagine the world without her. If there was a change that she would never have been there because say she was wild and the BLM did something to her, my life wouldn’t be the same because she has taught me so much and all of these mustangs tell us a story about the west back when they ruled over their own fields and didn’t have the BLM trying to get rid of them so they can get their money. It is inhumane for them to kill these animals. Killing these animals, putting them in holding facilities that don’t always have room (and some horses stay there their whole lives), and running them to exaustion and then sendint then away for slaughter is not the correct way to treat these animals. Shouldn’t that count as animal abuse? These horses need to be treated with respect by the BLM because they are part of American history and iff the BLM kills them off, how would people feel if part of their history, that didn’t deserve to go away, actually went extinct? The mustangs are special to every American in this country even if they don’t know it. The rest of the Amerrican public deserves to know what is going on. Thousands of people in American, maybe more, don’t know about our mustangs, so technically their mustangs as well, being killed, being exausted, and endangered all because of the BLM not tkaing proper care of them and letting bad things happen to them or even trying to experiment on these horses. If no one else knows about these horses and doesn’t know how to help them, then they need to know. I keep seeing tv commercials about the elephants being hunted down and I think that the mustangs, the mustangs that are IN America, should have something like that to raise awareness of their hunting and their slaughter as well. The BLM shouldn’t be the ones to take care of them, if they let so many bad things happen to these horses.

It is appalling that entrenched ranching interests have owned the BLM for so many decades. No matter how public interests make themselves heard, the “responsible” arms of government remain entirely under control of those whose private interests remain against the wild horses. This is what really maddens me.
So we have to come up with a pathway to circumvent those authorities. Limited measures to address particular grievances will always be thwarted by pernicious forces. So eventually there has to be a way to create a new governing body for management and control of wild horses, taking it completely out of the reach of the BLM. And then we must ensure that good people, only good people, are enlisted to staff that body.
The blm should be shut down and reorganized by a different mentality of people. The public owns All those mustangs blm has no right to sell them for slaughter. Some of those people should go to Jail. And as for the the cattle ranchers—free grazing land—Put the mustangs back where they belong and quit killing them

They need to shut down the BLM. Killing the wild mustangs is like killing a part of American Heritage, how dare they make this decision without Americans vote. Just one more freedom lost! These are a unique horses, native only to our American land! They need to be stopped!
