Wild Horses: Court Gives BLM Green Light to Destroy West Douglas Herd
September 16, 2015Wild Horses: BLM to Sterilize Idaho Wild Horse Herd – Endgame for America’s Wild Horses
October 24, 2015Proposed Removal of over 1700 Wild Horses in the Red Desert Complex in Wyoming
Wyoming is on a Campaign to Wipe Out its Wild Horses
The BLM is currently accepting public comments on a plan to remove 1700 wild horses from Wyoming’s Red Desert Complex, which includes the following herds: Lost Creek, Stewart Creek, Green Mountain, Crooks Mountain and Antelope Hills.
Initially, when the BLM released their Scoping Document for public comment in February, the proposed action was to treat the mares with a birth control drug, PZP-22, then release them. Now the BLM has changed course and despite the thousands of comments from the public against this action, and requesting bait and water trapping rather than the cruel and inhumane method of using helicopters to chase and drive the horses, has stated that Alternative 2 which includes removing 1700 horses, 45% of all the horses left in Wyoming, and only giving fertility control to 23 mares is now the proposed action.
Alternative 1 is to remove all wild horses outside of HMA boundaries and utilize fertility control on mares to be released back to the HMA. In this alternative, 482 wild horses outside the boundaries of the HMAs would be removed and 713 mares would be treated with PZP fertility control and released along with 607 stallions. This alternative is preferable to the proposed action, but rather than removing the horses outside of the boundaries of the HMA, they should be returned to the HMA.

Personalized comments work the best, so I am going to give you some items to cover, but please use your own words:
Alternative 1 should be used. Removals of wild horses from their homes must be avoided – there is no place to put them and already 50,000 wild horses filling holding facilities to capacity. Use of PZP fertility control to control the population of these herd areas should be used instead of removal.
Alternative 1 should be modified in one respect – the horses outside the HMAs should be returned to the HMAs rather than being removed.
Three of the five herds have AMLs too low to insure genetic diversity of these horses. Removal of wild horses to the low end of AML in these Herd Management Areas will jeopardize the health of these herds.
During the roundup, horses should be kept in their family bands, and they should definitely be kept within the HMAs that they came from. Horses have a complex social and family structure and should not be treated like livestock.
The public should be given 14 days notice of start date of the roundups so that interested citizens have adequate time to arrange to observe the roundups.
Land Use Plans should be revised to allow AMLs to be raised for all of these Herd Management Areas, and livestock grazing should be reduced. Wild Horses should be managed as the principle species where they are found, according to the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971.

Please leave the horses alone. You’ve already killed at least one horse or more each time with your inhumane tactics of using a helicopter. Stop looking at dollar signs from ranchers. These horses aren’t a threat to their cattle and we’re here first. The proof in that are the fossil and bones found just recently of horses that were wild in the ice age. By taking them away, you take away a rich part of our history from so many and our children. Then you adopt or sell to known kill buyers who slaughter these horses. If you’re going to adopt or sell them you need to do a no slaughter contract. Please stop these round ups Asap. There’s absolutely no need for it, especially with the helicopter which is not only cruel but puts more unnecessary stress on a horse and don’t chase them over an hour in the heat, their deaths are your fault when you do this and that’s really sad. If you love these horses as much as you claim you do, prove it.
What is their crime?? Why does the government have to manage
or micro manage everything in America? Seems like they meddle
with so many areas now, that it is time to think about how we can
help them instead of destroying. They have as much right for
survival than the bloody people who force their ideals on them.
stop it
Please return the bands to their areas and treat the mares with birth ontrol and reduce cattle grazing on the wild horse territories! Please!! No hei
Please do not use Helicopters or put herds inholding pens. Abide y the Wild Horse and Burro Act
I am horrified to learn that BLM wants to wipe out the iconic Red Desert wild horses. We have so many in long term holding pens at tax payer expense already. Horses are better managers of the land than cattle and sheep. Please stop the removal of any more wild horses. Remove the intrusive and destructive cattle and sheep and let the horses remain on the land that has been set aside for them. Removing more herds is no longer an option. Removing the cattle and sheep is a more viable, long term plan for the land and for the tax payers. Leave the horses on the land where they belong, not in holding pens!
when I was young and in college, the BLM was started as a way to p rote the the wild horse. I was glad that this program was in effect. Now, I am not so sure who you really represent. certainly, not the land, nor the horses, nor the public.
If you remove the horses, you are destroying more trust in a government that is only governing itself. You show no respect for the masses of people who pay taxes to keep public lands public. You allow private interests to manipulate you and your group. Stand up and say, “no more cattle and no more foreign interests mining on public land. How many millions of Bison and horses and cattle were on the land before we, the interlopers, upset the balance of nature.
Why don’t you look to the group on Chinoteague and Asseteague and see how they control the herd? Why can’t there be a group for each area to work with controlling the size of the herds? The upper management needs to have horse management skills and be looking for alternate ways of getting these horses adopted. Why not get more involved with the prison system and get the horses already in pens out there? People are more likely to adopt if the animal has had handling. Have you been to the Mustang Makeovers? The horses seem to bring in the money all because they have been started? I would adopt one, but I don’t want to start it.
Think about all of the messages here that offer some sense of solution.
Thank you,
Karen Kusey
STOP IT. leave the last sign of the wild west alone. they have the right to be there because god put them there. they should be on the endangered species list to be left alone. let the native Americans manage the wild horse not the BLM. what would the greed rancher do if the BLM told them that they could only have 5 horses to work their ranches. Maybe the ranchers need to down grade their herdes of cows. and leave the wild horse were the are and have all ways been. sincerely yours Tammy Castle.
Please do not decimate these wild horse herds!!! They are already in jeopardy and more of the wild horses are in holding pens than roam the wilderness where ware supposed to be protected!!!! No more roundups!!!! Instead use the proven birth control methods on the range that have been recommended by scientists and wild horse experts. Leave these horses alonw!!!
Please stop these attacks on OUR wild horses—how many dead foals, mares, and stallions will it take to satisfy your thirst for dead horses? Get the cattle and sheep off the horse ranges. Put them in the stockyards—free the horses.
Very Bad and Stop Immediately
( I USE CAPS TO SEE THE PRINT BETTER, I’M NOT YELLING) I’M 62 AND SINCE I HAVE BEEN A CHILD WITH A JUMPER HORSE I HAVE LOVED HORSES. I GREW UP READING EVERY BOOK AND STORY THAT I COULD GET MY HANDS ON. IT WAS MY DREAM TO TRAVEL TO THE WESTERN STATES SOMEDAY AND REALLY SEE THESE MAGNIFICENT ANIMALS. I WANTED TO ACTUALLY SEE OUR WESTERN HERITAGE AND HISTORY IN THESE BEAUTIFUL MARES, FOALS, AND STALLIONS THAT RUN AND LIVE FREE. I NEVER DREAMED THAT THE DAY WOULD COME THAT THESE HORSES WOULD BE CONSISTENTLY CHASED BY HELICOPTERS, ABUSED BY RIDERS, PUT IN HOLDING PENS WITHOUT PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS, AND SOME SOLD FOR SLAUGHTER FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION. BECAUSE OF HEALTH REASONS I MAY NEVER GET TO SEE THESE BEAUTIFUL WILD ANIMALS IN THEIR NATIVE HABITAT; BUT, THAT WON’T STOP ME FROM URGING THE BLM TO SAVE THESES WILD HORSES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. I DON’T THINK THE CATTLE AND SHEEP RANCHERS NEED TO HAVE ALL THE FREE LAND FOR GRAZING. THOSE HORSES HAVE LIVED THERE HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE RANCHERS WERE EVEN THERE. I SUBMIT THAT THE BLM UTILIZE BIRTH CONTROL AND RETURN THE HORSES TO THEIR NATIVE AREAS. IF THERE MUST BE ADOPTIONS I ENCOURAGE THE BLM TO CHECK BACKGROUNDS AND ADOPT OUT TO CARING OWNERS AND NOT KILL BUYERS. PLEASE LEAVE THE WILD HORSES TO LIVE WILD AND FREE AND BE A REALITY FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS INSTEAD OF A FAIRY TALE. GOD GAVE MAN THE DOMINION OVER THE EARTH AND ANIMALS TO USE– NOT ABUSE– AND WE ARE TO BE GOOD STEWARDS.
Please let these beautiful animals run free – do not destroy them. Can you not see we are destroying all that we love in our World – soon we will not have anything to admire and love. In early times killing was to survive of animals – now it is the greed of the Dollar that runs peoples lives – look back and live with a more simple approach to life- we need something wonderful to let our eyes see before it is all destroyed.
Have any of you looked into an animals eyes – the love is boundless. I only wish humans were the same. Please do not destroy our animal World. Their is so much sadness please do not take away our joy.
Stop the inhumane removal of these gorgeous wild animals- who rightfully deserve to remain free.
Stop
Stop!!!
What you (the BLM) is proposing for the “management” of the wild horse herds of the Red Dessert in Wyoming is inhumane and a clear sign that you no longer follow the original founding guidelines set up by the first BLM. Your agency is as corrupt and mismanaged as the FDA. You have been so bribed and influenced by big corporations that you no longer CARE for the very animals and land your agency was created to protect. Wild horses have lived and died free in our nation since the dawn of time. They don’t need YOU to do anything but leave them alone! If you have to do something then listen to the tax payers that are begging and shouting at you to just do what is right.
If you HAVE to interfere at a then please at least go with alternative 1! However it should be modified so that the horses outside the HMAs should be returned to the HMAs rather than being removed.
Three of the five herds from this area have AML’s too low to insure genetic diversity for those herds. If you remove those wild horses to the low end of AML in these Herd Management Areas it WILL jeopardize the health of these herds! Or maybe you are intending to do that so they will die out? Is that your nefarious scheme? If you did that then it will “sort of” look like you had tried to help, but in fact you would be hurting them. Such tactics make me sick!
During the roundup, PLEASE don’t use helicopters and PLEASE guarantee that horses be kept IN family bands! They should also be kept within the HMAs that they came from! Horses have a complex social and family structure and should not be treated like livestock, which you know if you know ANYTHING about horse, but the BLM just doesn’t care, do they?
Do the right thing! Listen to the actual HORSE knowledgeable people that are TRYING to speak sense to you. Quit trying to destroy a National Treasure just as wonderful, powerful and important to this nations (if not more) then The Statue of Liberty or Mount Rushmore. These are breathing LIVING creatures that were the building blocks for the settling of this Nation. STOP treating them like yesterdays trash! They AREN’T, but you in the BLM certainly STINK!
Please send your comments in to the BLM today so they can be read and counted: RedDesertComplex_HMA_WY@blm.gov
Please let these creatures of GOD be left alone or put them up for FREE ADOPTION!!!!!! SOME OF US WITH HORSES WOULD LOVE TO GIVE THEM A HOME & CARE FOR THEM BUT YOU ALWAYS PUT A PRICE ON THEM!!!!!! THEY AERNT YOURS TO DO THAT WITH. THIS IS A MAJOR PART OF HISTORY FOR OUR YOUNGSTERS SO WHY TAKE IT ALL AWAY? YOUR GETTING AD BAD AS THE SLUTTER PLACES THEY KILL BUTT WANT US TO BUY FOR A HIGH PRICE, BULL!!!!! YOU REALLY DONT CARE ABOUT THE BEING OF THESE CREATURES ITS THE MIGHTY $$$$$. IF SO MANY OF US WOULD BE THERE TO TAKE A FEW HOME A CARE FOR THEM!!!!! GOD BLESS THE HORSES & ALSO THE PEOPLE NOT SEEING THE WHOLE PICTURE.? SAVE A HORSE ?
Please save our wild horses families from being split up and put through hell for the rest of their lives. I know a lot of them are sold to kill buyers and shipped to the hell hole of slaughter in Mexico. Please have some compassion and save our national treasure. The wild horse is not livestock for eating, and should be protected on our public lands. The ranchers just want to take advantage of our public lands because of their greed. I beg you to please stop these inhumane round ups.
I hate they are destroying all of our Wild Horses. Stop the Round ups now. Get the cattle and sheep off the free range that is for the Wild Life.
These magnificent horses are God created and entitled to live out their days free from inhumane treatment. Don’t destroy them just because you can. Find kind and compassionate ways to help herds not harm them. Can you not put their needs above inconvenience and the almighty dollar? Have a heart!!!!!!!!
As an interested member of the public, the following are my comments are the BLM’s plan to remove 1700 wild horses from lands in Wyoming. The BLM needs to listen to the interested public and use methods of “managing” wild horse populations that are in the long term interests of the horses. One method that is unacceptable in this day and age is chasing horses by helicopters. In addition, when captured, horses should be kept in their faulty bands.
Moreover, wild mares should be treated with PZP fertility control and left to roam the where they have traditionally roamed. Alternative 1, while far from perfect, is preferable to the other alternatives proposed by the BLM. In addition, rather than removing horses outside the boundaries of the HMA, those horses should be returned to the HMA.
The public cares about wild horses in America. The public is watching the actions of the BLM with regard to wild horses in Wyoming and elsewhere. These horses are part of our culture and should be honored, not persecuted.
Please remember everyone to send in your comments to the BLM – that is the way they will be read and counted – by 4pm Mountain Time here: RedDesertComplex_HMA_WY@blm.gov
It is very difficult to understand to me why a large part of our American Heritage is being removed. Have we not destroyed enough elements around us ? Are children and families in a few years, needing to go to a game reserve, or zoo to see wild horses? Look what has happened to so many species already. The wolves have really been the target for so many years. We remove them, trapping, shooting, etc. and then decide after they are gone from an area for a period of time, to plant them back, because they were useful. What? This makes no sense It costs tax payers millions of dollars to do this ! And, we have no say ! This is not right on any level. We in Arizona are dealing with this as well, with the Salt River Wild Horses. I wish the powers to be would look at our history, and see that mankind has not always made the best decisions, and that Mother Nature should be respected!
Please stop destroying these horses..They are a part of our American heritage!
Please stop Chace ing 5he horses with helicopters. Leave 5he horses alone. I have always been proud to be from wyoming but not this it is so wrong. Please stop.
The horses have been a part of a natural hidtory. They were there during the war sacrificing and came to our lands by the Spsnish. Their history is long and deep. To take them for the sake of cattle grazing for ranchers and the process of how you round them up is tragic. You are destroying a herd that can share the vast lands.
Greedy ranchers…may I get a helicopter and chase your cattle around with it? Kill Buyers…may I round up all of you and ship you off? There are alternatives to the total eradication of the wild horse herds. I am ashamed of the human race. ?
Leave the wild horses alone. They were born free to live free. This land is their land. It is not land for cattle. They belong on the ranches of their owners.
Leave these magnificent animals alone. They are part of our history and belong to us all
PLEASE STOP THE INHUMANITY!!! These beautiful animals DO NOT deserve the treatment that you people are doing to them! They are so much of Americana & in so many ways, a tremendous part of what this once great nation is today! Have you no hearts, no consciences?!? All you see are $$$ signs & votes from big ranchers to those of you who are in this w/the government!!! This is SICKENING!!! Who & what are these magnificent creations of our Awesome Creator hurting except the greedy land owners, ranchers & the governing?!? The people who are where they are today because of horses….that’s who!!! If not for horses, the farmers, ranchers, the government on all levels & many other groups of people would not have what they have if it weren’t for horses some where along the way in their life, now or most definitely in past generations, & this is how you want to treat these animals who have every right to be as free as you & me??? PLEASE STOP…stop the round ups that are in any way shape & form, detrimental to the wellbeing of the horses, stop putting them in holding facilites that are called “humane”, stop seperating herds, stop trying to wipe out these beautiful symbols of what MADE this country & will continue if only given a fair chance!!! Please stop the cruel & insensitive madness!!!
Stop! Leave the wild horses alone!!!!!
Hi everyone. Please remember to send your comments in to the BLM today here: RedDesertComplex_HMA_WY@blm.gov
Thanks!
Carol
Shame on you for not considering our wishes to let the Wild Horses roam free.
Who are you to decide their faith?! They are OUR horses too!
Stop the roundups, stop the killing!
Please leave these wild horses alone! Stop!
Please leave these wild horses alone! Stop the roundup of these beautiful animals!
Please quit fighting to remove these native wild horses from their rightful place! Alternative 1 should be modified in one respect – the horses outside the HMAs should be returned to the HMAs rather than being removed.
Stop this insanity! You don’t remove the other wildlife on these lands. or decimate the other species cohabitating on the land! The horses are much a part of the land as the lowly rodents, or the soaring birds. The treatment of wild horses has become reprehensible.
This is plain insanity. There are Not as many WILD HORSES as what the BLM states.. Why and who is in a Authority over this ?? Call Sally Jewel . LEAVE MESSAGES AND SEND EMAILS.. THIS IS ANIMAL CRUELTY !!!!! 🙁
Concerning the Red Desert Complex:
I strongly protest the removal of anymore of our wild horses from the land they have been on all their lives. These horses hurt no one and under Federal law are supposed to be protected by the government. The BLM has over 50,000 in holding facilities. They stand in barren pastures with no shelter from the extreme weather conditions they endure. The BLM needs to act responsibly and stop caving in to the ” welfare” ranchers whose cattle destroy the land.
I do not want my tax dollars spent on any more of the inhumane helicopter roundups. The latest roundup was poof enough to everyone that these roundups are inhumane.
Enough is enough.
PLEASE STOP TERRORIZING & DEPLETING ONE OF THIS COUNTRYS NATIONAL TREASURES! RESPECT THESE MAGNIFICENT HARMLESS BEAUTIES & SUPPORT AIDING THEM NOT TORTURING THEM! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BE HUMANE!
I hope & pray that everyone who commented here on Carol’s blog has sent their comments on to the BLM – thats the only way to get this point across.
We have 80 acres in red desert. It would be nice if they notified us and ask the property owners. I say leave the horses alone please!
