March 22, 2013Wild Horses: Mica’s Second Ride
Last month, Rich came out to work with my horses, and I had put the four of them into my corral. As soon as he walked in, they were paying attention to him, but that did not mean they were just going to walk up to him and be caught.
There had to be some fun running around.
Mica is always the easiest to catch, and he finally stopped and stood as Rich walked up to him.
Rich handled him before putting the halter on, to make sure he was soft, then led him to the fence.
He put the saddle pad then the saddle on, this was old hat after last time, and then Rich started to get up on Mica’s back, stepping up and stepping down several times so that Mica could become used to this.
Then Rich swung up on his back, and Mica stood, ears swivelling.
Rich bumped his sides a few times and as soon as Mica moved off, he stopped, so that Mica could begin learning the meaning of leg pressure.
Mica looked much more relaxed than during his first ride, but I have to admit I was surprised when Rich told me to open the gate – he rode Mica out into the pasture, with only a rope halter on him, no bridle. This was to give Mica more room to move.
I watched in delight as Mica walked then trotted around, leaning to turn from Rich’s weight and pressure on the halter.
Finally Rich got off, and Mica’s second ride was over, uneventful, but Mica clearly had learned quite a bit. After Rich let Mica go int he pasture, everyone had to run around again, just for fun.
Monty was more difficult to catch, so Rich got on his horse and roped him.
This time, Rich would work with Monty on become soft and accepting, and this was all done on the ground.
Finally Monty looked very relaxed, his head down, eyes almost closed. This was a breakthough for him, and so this was where Rich stopped.
I am very proud of both of my boys. They are happy to head out to graze.

Mica is so incredibly gorgeous!
This is so beautiful to see. Thank you for all you do…..!
Lovely story to watch unfold. You and your boys are lucky to have each other, Carol.
Thanks for these.
A beautiful name for a beautiful horse. Rich is a very cool, gentle man and Carol may be an Earth angel.
Oh, I love to see horses trained in such a gentle manner. Such beautiful and bright beings. I got my beloved Wichita at 18 months and found patience and gentleness is so important. I trained him slowly and got to know him well (he knew me even better). He was my partner for 33 years passed in my arms on 30 Nov 2013. There was a snowstorm, and the vet could not get there in time to make it easier, that was about the hardest thing I ever had to do. He still runs free in my heart. Cherish your relationships with these horses, they are all so special.
Are there any more updates about Mica?
All your horses are beautiful, and very lucky to be with you. You truly are an angel on earth, and I appreciate everything you do. Can’t wait to see more pictures of your babies.
Great blog.
Carol and Rich, Mica and Monte, I want to congratulate you on Mica and Monte!!!!! I’am so happy for you all!!! It just takes time and patience. BLM is going through this all wrong and so is those so-called Judges whom signs those death warrants!!!! Mica and Monte, you are both stunning and extremely precious and I absolutely hope that you and all of the other horse bands live extremely long, healthy and wonderful lives!!! I disagree wholeheartedly against BLM and those Judges!!!! Every time I see those pictures of those horrible helicopters chasing those poor beautiful horses, I just cringe!!! I want to see those Judges and BLM run for their lives while being chased by helicopters!!!! Please take care!!
