It’s a new year, and while it may be easy to get bogged down in all that’s wrong, I’m encouraging you to dream with me of positive change for our beautiful wild horses.
At the time the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act was passed, wild horses roamed on 49 million acres of our public lands. Today, they are in 177 herd management areas in 10 Western states, and can be found roaming on only 27 million acres. There are currently over 60,000 wild horses housed in holding facilities.
In this latest episode I list a course of positive actions that we can and should take to protect all wild horse families, today and into the future. Wild horses are valuable, in and of themselves, and they inspire us. They remind us what it is to be a part of nature. They deserve our respect and our protection, and should remain a part of our nation for many years to come.

Happy New Year to you too, Carol. As you point out, much of the news about wild horses is discouraging and hard to listen to. I appreciate your balance in discussing the hard issues while instilling hope for change. Our wild horses deserve no less. Thank you.
I agree maybe this Year our prayers will be answered for these sweet wild horses and barro. As you were saying the wild horses need free I agree that they are part of our nation they even help make our nation these beautiful creatures are so majestic we can’t keep letting to BLM get away with it we got to stand up and make our voices heard thank you Carol
