The Bureau of Land Management Just Released its Plan that will Ultimately Result in the Destruction of America’s Wild Horses and Burros

The BLM delivered its 2020 Report to Congress and this plan will cost the American taxpayer one billion dollars to remove 220,000 wild horses and burros from our public lands and place them in government holding facilities. Now the BLM is waiting 60 days before it receives the $21 million dollars that Congress allocated this year to begin implementing their plan.
Over the next 20 years, the BLM plans to conduct massive roundups and removals of wild horses all over the 10 western states that they call home. The goal of the BLM is to reach their Appropriate Management Level (AML ) of 27,000 wild horses and burros on over 26.9 million acres of public lands. This is not a scientifically set limit, this is an arbitrary number that the BLM set for the total population of wild horses and burros it would allow on public lands. If you calculate this out that means only one wild horse and burro per 1000 acres will be allowed, and this is on the lands that wild horses and burros are mandated to be managed. The plan calls for removing 18,000 to 20,000 wild horses and burros each year in order to reach this goal. The planned removals could start as early as the end of July 2020 with the removal of 10,000 wild horses and burros this year.

As of April, 2020 (BLM’s Facilities Report) there are over 48,025 wild horses and burros in holding facilities which range from short term holding corrals to long term holding feedlots or pastures. The BLM does not have enough room to house the incoming wild horses and burros so it is working on securing more holding facilities like this proposed feedlot which would hold 5000 wild horses in Laramie county, Wyoming: https://americanwildhorsecampaign.org/media/predatory-businessman-proposes-feedlot-5k-mustangs
In this plan, the BLM states that there is no guarantee whether or not there will be enough facilities to house this massive increase in captive wild horses and burros and it fails to disclose exactly what the total costs will be to the American taxpayer for warehousing and holding an additional 220,000 wild horses and burros. They have a proposed 50% budget increase each year for having to house this many wild horses and burros:
Year 1 $117 million; Year 2 $149 million; Year 3 $185 million; Year 4 $212 million; Year 5 238 million; Year 18 $360 million
Obviously this is incredibly large amount of money that will be dedicated to warehousing wild horses and burros who would be so much better off in the wild in their homes on our public lands. Obviously this cost is ridiculously unsustainable. And what of the wild horses and burros lucky enough to be among the 27,000 allowed to live in their federally designated homes on public lands? The BLM proposes to use instead of humane, reversible birth control, to use dangerous, unproven drugs, gelding of stallions and cruel and dangerous ovariectomies of wild mares. There is no concern on the BLM’s part as to how these drugs and sterilizations will affect the natural wild behaviors of the wild horses and burros that make them unique, wild and free.
Overwhelmingly, American taxpayers want to see our wild horses and burros remain free and humanely managed on our public lands. The 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was enacted to preserve and protect wild horses and burros and this plan violates both the spirit and the letter of the Act, and must not be allowed to stand as the new management guidelines for our wild horses and burros.

This is absolutely horrendous and unacceptable! We can’t allow this, our American heritage wild Mustangs and burros to be treated this way. They are native wildlife and belong out there more than we do. Actually, Iberian horses were introduced onto the main continent of North America in 1519, by Hernan Cortez. They are no more indigenous or “native” than the Europeans that brought them here.

Not all of the Mustangs are of Spanish descent. Many are from farmers turning horses loose or horses that got loose on their own. Different HMA’s have different traits depending on the breeds that make them up. My Paisley Desert Mustang looked very Morgan, a breed that herd is known for.

Leaving them alone for years is the cause of the problems. They will multiple and increase the herd size with no end in sight. Lots of emotion here but little common sense. Any solution will be very costly, and in the end, money matters, no matter how emotional it becomes.
There are humane, proven solutions that include tested birth control that works to control the populations of wild horses and burros where they need to be controlled. Having AMLs of 15 and 20 or even 60 wild horses as exists in many Herd Management Areas is senseless and a guarantee of no genetic Viability.
One of the other solutions is to retire the grazing leases in areas where horses are supposed to be the principle species. No reputable wild horse and burro advocacy group is asking to just leave the horses alone. But this plan is geared to overwhelm the holding facilities for horses and burros and the budget leading to the “inevitable” solution the ranchers want – destruction of the horses and burros.

Grew up around Wild Horses and Burros. They are not an overpopulated nusceince. They are majestic creatures that help manage wild grass overgrowth and wildfires by proxy. This whole idea of euthanizing wild horses and burros makes no sense to me. Are they damaging anything in the wild? Are they destroying personal property. Is the only reason giving to us is because the BLM only wants to see 27,000 of them. I say leave them alone, there is plenty of land out there to support them. Let’s say that the horses and burros are over populated, and there damaging personal property. Have more auctions or better yet, adoptions and have the goverment pay for shipping the animals to there new home. They will actually save money by shipping the animals then by feeding them in “holding facilities” Crazy Goverment buracarcy.

Everyone is a part of this decision because we voted for the jackasses that agreed with some pencil pushing desk jockey with nothing else to do so the mustang and burros made his hit list. This or these people need to get a life. This is so very wrong.
I have the God given privilege of seeing these beautiful animals everyday! They have to tolorate man coming onto their land with their side by sides and other vehicles, stirring up dust, running over their grass, and messing with their water plus scarring them! Why can’t a fee be put on the breeders that keep wanting to make more babies? The money could be used to help our beautiful wild horses and burros be healthy and free. God gave us a command to take care of His animals NOT destroy them!
Why?? Why is this administration so hell bent on destroying such beautiful creatures?? I am a Canadian and when I read what the BLM is up to, I am disgusted!

my thoughts on this who do we think we are first we steal the land from American Indians then we cut down and remove Forest leaving tons of wildlife without a home all for the sake of building for ourselves why do we think we own this land and can remove and annihilate what we find to be a burden or something that’s we feel is threatening enough of this this land was given to us to use what it had not to destroy with already on it we are hurting ourselves in the long run Lemoore slaughtering we do in killing we do and taking of what is not ours will have its effects in the long run it will be your grandchildren and your grandchildren’s grandchildren that are going to be punished the most stop with all the nonsense

Yes this was all engineered by the Cattlemen’s associations, the Humane Society of the US, ASPCA, Return to Freedom as a “great compromise” that they touted as a win and the rest of the organizations who are actually working to protect and help wild horses who were in no way represented in this deal said would result in catastrophe for our wild horses and burros. And guess what? Now we are faced with the plan which does not protect wild horses, does not manage them humanely but puts them all at risk of sterilization or death.

Thanks Breeze, yes I saw that, they did not like the word “annihilate” and I obviously struck a nerve. They have been going after posts by wild horse advocates. I am not sure a correction will be accepted by this fact checker who just swallowed what the BLM said but I am working on finding a way to contact Facebook directly about this.
